Samsung Galaxy A51 in 2022: Is it worth buying in Kuwait?
The Samsung A51 is a budget-friendly smartphone that offers a lot of features for the price. It has a 5.5-inch HD display, an octa-core processor, and 3GB of RAM. The phone also has a 13MP rear camera and 8MP front camera.
Looking at the A51 and A50 side by side. To get started, the new model has another camera. It is a closed focus shooter with 5 megapixels. The chipset is also excellent compared to the last version. The A51 is equipped with the Exynos 9611, in contrast to last year’s phone 9610. And as the diagonal of the screen grows 0.1 inches, the scale shrinks, but the theme continues.
There is a 48-megapixel quad Bayer main unit that replaces the A50’s traditional 25-megapixel module, increasing the number of pixels in the ultra-wide camera’s sensor-it’s now 12 megapixels as opposed to the A50’s 8-megapixels. And still with 123-degree coverage.
Unlike the A50 notch, the selfie camera is located in the top center notch of the display. Infinity-O replaces Infinity-U. In fact, the camera itself has to be eligible for an upgrade – a 32 MP quadbayer unit compared to the A50’s 25MP snapper.
PROS
- Excellent portraits, above average close-ups, generally good daylight quality from all cameras.
- Reliable battery life, relatively fast charging.
- Small and light for screen size and battery capacity, excellent design.
- Super AMOLED screen that is very bright and with good colours.
CONS
- The camera malfunctions in dark places.
- No video stabilisation at 4K, no 60 frame / s mode at 1080p.
- Chipsets are not as powerful as those offered by competitors.
1. WHAT’S INSIDE THE BOX
- The Phone itself.
- Pretty long USB C Cable.
- 15W power brick.
- User Manual and paper works.
Inside, you’ll find the Galaxy A51. Along with the phone, you’ll also find a 15-watt power adapter – a proven Samsung QC2.0-based adaptive fast charging unit, and a USB-A to C cable to complete the connection.
A set of headphones is also part of the package, but there is no protective phone cover – other manufacturers take a completely different approach, and we would probably choose a cover instead of headphones.
2. DESIGN
- Phone Weigh at 172g
- The phone’s dimensions are 158.5 x 73.6 x 7.9 mm
- USB-C Port for charging
- Gorilla Glass – 3
The back of the phone packs primary cameras. Like it or not, the large rectangular cluster in the upper-left corner grouping all the shooters under one roof is how the company’s phone adapts to its ever-growing number of smartphones. The Galaxy A51 here has a total of four cameras on the back.
The camera cluster is raised by about a millimeter, but that doesn’t mean it’s particularly prone to wobble if it bothers you. Even on the camera, the flash has found its place, and since there is no fingerprint reader on the back, the only thing that breaks continuity on the back is a camera module.
Samsung thought it needed an accent and gave it a point with a rather unique finish. A diagonal line arbitrarily part of a completely distinct part of the upper back body, while another part is with a plain finish. When the light hits the phone, the back of the phone reflects rainbow colors.
The back panel of A51 is completely made up of plastic, the Gorilla Glass on the back could be a bit safer. The front is protected by Gorilla Glass-3, so your screen must be at least safer.
The selfie camera cut out is Infinity-O, that’s what Samsung calls it. The cut-out is minimal and does not obstruct any view.
Down at the bottom, there is a USB-C port in the middle. There is a headphone jack on one side and a primary speaker and microphone on the other side. There’s another mic at the top, that’s it.
3. DISPLAY
- The size of the display is a 6.5-inch Super AMOLED.
- The pixel density is around ~405ppi (1080 x 2400 pixels)
- The screen ratio is 20:9 (~87.4% screen-to-body ratio)
This is Samsung’s OLED screen and it works as we expected from them.
The maximum brightness was 636 nits when the Adaptive Brightness was on and 413 nits when the slider was on. The minimum brightness was 1.8nit.
Vivid mode offers a hot-cold slider in 5 positions. In particular, I liked the white and grey color in the warmer settings, so when I look at the colour samples in front of the DCI-P3 target, the overall average is deltaE 2.7.
The midpoint of the slider is slightly worse than the average of the Delta E 3.3 and is not exactly white. It changes relatively from blue to Delta E4.
4. PERFORMANCE
- This Phone comes with an Exynos 9611 (10nm) chip inside it.
- Talking about the core: 4Nos of 2.3 GHz Cortex-A73 and 4Nos of 1.7 GHz Cortex-A53 at 10nm process
- 4/6/8 GB of RAM
- The storage available options are: 64, 128 and 256 GB
The Galaxy A51 uses the integrated Exynos 9611 chipset. This is a minor upgrade from last year’s 9610 and only supports high-resolution cameras. In fact, we saw a performance boost on the M30, which we also used the 9611 for, so there’s probably more to it than what we’re seeing in the specs.
However, this particular Exynos is based on a 10nm process and includes an 8-core CPU in the classic 2×4-4×2.3GHz Cortex-A73 and 4×1.7GHz Cortex-A53 configurations. The graphics processor is a Mali-G72 MP3. There are three versions of RAM/storage: 64.4 GB, 128.4 GB, and 128.6 GB, which are our mid-range test units.
In our bench-marking session, the Galaxy A51 proved to be below the benchmark set by competitors in its price range. The Snapdragon 730 featured in the Realme X2 and Xiaomi Mi 9T is noticeably more powerful in all applications, whether they are processor-intensive or GPU-intensive.
The Huawei Nova 5T based on the flagship SoC Kirin 980 is once in a class of its own, but fits the budget.
The A51 holds the Nokia 7.2 in terms of processor performance, but the older Snapdragon 660 in 7.2 also has better graphics than the Galaxy.
5. BATTERY LIFE
- It has a 4000 mAh capacity battery.
- Fast charging up to 15W
The Galaxy A51 has a 4000mAh battery, the same as which replaces the model, and is pretty much the norm in this segment.
Despite using the same chipset, the A51 features a slightly larger screen and a different operating system, so we expected at least some difference in battery life, and that’s exactly what we got.
We logged 13 and a half hours on the web over WiFi, an hour longer than the A50 handles.
Once again, we’re seeing an hour and a half drop in video playback at 14 and half hours, and it’s still a respectable number. 20 hours of calls aren’t amazing, but it will do the work.
In the end, the overall Battery durability of the Galaxy A51 reaches 86 hours.
6. CAMERA
- Wide camera lens: 48 MP, f/2.0, 26mm, 1/2.0″, 0.8µm, PDAF
- Ultra-wide camera lens: 12 MP, f/2.2, 123˚
- Macro lens: 5 MP, f/2.4
- Depth lens: 5 MP, f/2.2
48MP Quad Bayer Main unit is very common in Mid-range smartphones. Then there is a high 12-megapixel wide-angle camera that is upgraded from 8 MP which is seen in most Samsung smartphones.
A51 also has a 5 MP macro camera while the others choose a modest 2MP module for close shots.
There are other 5 MP cameras as depth sensors just to increase the camera count. I doubt it does anything.
The picture of Galaxy A51 shoots a decent picture but is not really extraordinary. It has a good dynamic range and manages our heavy illuminated scene. Images are adequately sharp. Colours are great overall and the phone has a good saturation balance.
The ultra-wide-angle camera is a major upgrade over the A50, offering improved sharpness and detail. Dynamic range has also been significantly improved, making it a fairly capable ultra-wide camera as far as mid-rangers are concerned.
Low-light photos on the Galaxy A51 aren’t great. The main camera’s output is smooth and loud, but colours are relatively desaturated. The dynamic range is OK for what it’s worth.
Night mode solves many of the A51’s low-light shooting problems, but comes with a caveat: It cuts down heavily and produces 8-megapixel stills. On the plus side, the main camera photos are now sharper and sharper in the shadows, though we can’t say there’s an achievement in terms of colour.
The portraits of the Galaxy A51 are really good. Subject detection and isolating is exemplary, and blur looks good at the 7.5’s default settings (which you can adjust before or after shooting). HDR is also available in Live Focus mode, which isn’t available on all phones’ portrait modes. It also works successfully on non-human subjects.
7. AUDIO
- A 3.5mm headphone jack is present.
The Samsung Galaxy A51 showed enthusiastic performance with an active external amplifier and scored top scores with an almost impressive volume.
The volume stayed high with the headphones on, and we got a little extra distortion and moderate stereo cross-talk.
Overall it is an excellent audio experience overall considering the price point.
8. SOFTWARE
The Galaxy A51 unit is equipped with Android 10 with a Samsung One UI 2.5 user interface. Up-gradable to Android 11, One UI 3.1
Samsung has a very bad reputation for updating their devices to the latest Android versions. Hopefully, they will support this device for many years to come.
9. VALUE
Samsung is a budget mobile phone from Xiaomi and Realme and will never make it easy in the mid-range.
Branding is one thing, but the Samsung A51 does not add anything extra to compete with its competitor in the mid-range sector of smartphones.
Better available options in Kuwait compared to Samsung A51: –
- Huawei Nova 5T
- Mi 9T (Redmi K20)
- Realme X2
10. FINAL VERDICT
The Galaxy A51 offers a reasonable feature set and works well in most key areas.
It is one of the lightest phones in its class while having a great screen and without sacrificing battery life.
Normally for Samsung, there isn’t much to complain about the A51’s screen.
A full upgrade in the camera department means good daylight shots from all cameras, with great selfies and a “macro” camera that’s hard to beat.
Updated software at launch, with additional features that were reserved for the flagship now found in Samsung Galaxy A51.
